Media's Role in Stolen Election of 2016

The Stolen Election of 2016

In none of the various Year End Reviews I saw in December was there any mention of the stolen election of 2016.  This should be a cause for consternation.

Yesterday's New York Times rather bravely published articles expressing regret for the various "sins" of the media in the campaign leading up to the 2016 election. These sins of omission, and commission were mighty indeed.  Ironically, The Times happened to be one of the media sources doing true, credible journalism on both Trump and his campaign.

Shockingly, The Times reported on a study which found that the television evening newscasts devoted a total of only thirty-six minutes to true issue reporting!  This was down from over three hours in 2012 -- still a shockingly low figure.  But thirty-six minutes?!

Obviously, this is outrageous.  The Times goes on to characterize media in 2015-16 as being more or less an amplification system for Trump.  Admittedly, this included negative "coverage."  But Trump was very skillful in turning negative coverage into a benefit.

Thus, the media has been complicit in giving us the incredible -- a nascent Donald Trump Presidency.  Please stop and think about that for a moment.  Donald Trump -- Donald Trump -- President of the United States?  Scotty, beam me up.

N.B.   "Scotty, beam me up," has become a trite phrase.  Yet it is the best one I can think of to describe this alternate planet or universe we seem to be living in.  It doesn't have to be.
