Michael Moore's Five-Point Program

Resistance Can Be Planned

It is still not too late to demand that Congress reject the illegitimate and even illegal electoral votes in key battleground states -- states where votes were suppressed in at least nine different ways according to Greg Palast.

Let us do what we can to continue to make friends aware of the stolen election and to have them concentrate efforts on Congress.

Then, we can use Michael Moore's program as Plan B.

Last Chance to Stop Trump Through the System?

According to the careful research of experienced reporter, Greg Palast, what happened in November was a stolen election at the level of the federal officers, including the President.  References to his stellar work can be found on this blog.

There remains one more way to stop a Trump Presidency under normal procedure.  That is for Congress to reject Electoral votes on January 6 in sufficient numbers to send the election to the House.  The House would then have to elect a President.

Normally an optimistic sort, I must admit that unless people become aroused enough to demand such a procedure there leaves little other option for stopping the mogul from Manhattan, except...

There are always miracles, of course.  And believers should definitely be praying for a miracle now.  Miracles do happen.

Second, the public can bombard Congress and the White House with petitions for action to stop such a dangerous person from becoming President.

Third, and crucially important -- yet often overlooked -- the media must help get the word out about the voter suppression tactics used by Republican operatives in this and other elections.

Fourth would be a mass political movement of the Arab Spring type.

So, there are possibilities.  Perhaps we could start with the first objective above.  There isn't much time.  We must begin forthwith.

Pro-Trump Electors Prove Faithless

Is non-violent civil disobedience next?

Contrary to the popular use of the term 'faithless', those in the Electoral College who today voted for D. Trump are showing their lack of fidelity to American values -- including one person, one vote;  the rule of law, including equality before the law;  the U.S. Constitution including freedom of the press and religion, and the emoluments clause;  respect for those less fortunate including the sick and the disabled;  contempt for veterans such as John McCain;  contempt for women;  contempt for study;  contempt for the desires of the American people for a stable world politically.

[More content coming soon.]

Abolish the Electoral College?

If the U.S. Constitution is a work in progress, that would include everything in it, including the Electoral College.  And in a very real sense, this blog post can only be a part of the process as well.

For I believe that the Electoral College as it now functions can certainly be looked at.  However, abolishing the Electoral College in favor of a simple popular vote needs to be looked at very carefully -- much more carefully than it has so far.

It is tempting and indeed it as alluring to consider a system which seems to extend democracy to an area perceived as undemocratic this year, as in 2000.  However, my study of the issue so far indicates that while modernization may indeed be in order to address a more urban nation, outright abolition may not, in fact, be the answer.

Among my concerns are the problem of certifying the vote.  With strong and credible allegations of a stolen election this year, how can we be sure the vote that is announced is correct, especially in a close election.  Who would do the certifying for a national office such as the Presidency?

As for this year, should the Electoral College vote for D. Trump, America's demagogue, the results must be challenge before Congress, which has final authority over accepting of rejecting the votes of any state.

What I am presenting today is only the tip of the iceberg, of course.  But I do believe rather than a wholesale abolition of the Electoral College, better to get big money out of politics.

More on this subject coming.

Opposition to Impending Trump Presidency Continues to Build

Rush Post

Somewhat surprisingly from my point of view opposition to a Trump Presidency has built to something like a fever pitch in some circles over the last several days.  Protests were already in the works and this preparation seems to have laid the groundwork for a swelling of public outrage over Russian influence over the election as well as Republican dirty tricks.

If Americans were really so distressed over a Hillary Clinton Presidency why is she now leading in the popular vote by around three million?  And with Dr. Jill Stein and Greg Palast doing such good work in exposing Republican voter suppression tactics, especially in battleground states, it is evident that Trump won no Electoral College vote.  This has been particularly true since the Electoral College does not vote until tomorrow.

And now come polling results that indicate a majority of Americans want a delay in the Electoral College vote until the truth about alleged undue Russian influence on the election is understood better.*

The article below, though a bit wordy, gives a good summation of all the reasons why D. Trump, even if selected by the Electoral College or even the House of Representatives, would be illegitimate.

How the Electoral College Can Save America from Trump

Lawrence Lessig is the best writer on the subject of the Electoral College I have run across on line.  This well-reasoned article is a very clear and useful essay on what the Electors can and should do to stop the worst aspects of fascism from entering the White House.

Our current situation is a national emergency.  Today's New York Times article on Russian interference in the U.S. election process demonstrates this amply.  It is past time to take this matter very seriously.

We can start by forwarding the article below to friends and family.  Then we can take to heart the admonition to create an energy from the bottom up, so our leaders will be forced to do the right thing.  Let us be non-violent, but let us act with all due dispatch.

The Electoral College Can Save America from Trumpism

Just Thinking

Why do ever so many journalists, pundits, and activists persist in using words such as "likely/unlikely," "probable/improbable," as well as "odds," and "chances"?   An example:  It is very unlikely, such as such will happen.

I have checked the dictionary definition of "likely."   It leads to "probable," which itself leads to other words such as "speculation."   Thus, saying something is "likely," is akin to merely speculating.  Of course, speculations do often turn out to be correct.  But often they are not correct as in "It is very unlikely Donald Trump will be nominated by the Republican Party."

What we need is a little less speculation, and a little more action.

Anti-Trump Effort in Electoral College Continues to Grow

Effort Slow But Steady;  Already Tops Previous Record Number of Electors

An elector in California has become the tenth member of the Electoral College to join the anti-Trump effort in that important voting body, Politico has reported.  This is said to be the largest number of protesting electors since 1808.

Every effort must be made to oppose Trump.  This is clearly a time for courage, and Elector Vinz Koller of California is leading the way.

Hitler Could Have Been Stopped

It is commonly known that various nations in Europe -- Britain, France, and Russia -- could have stopped Hitler.  What is less often understood is that Hitler could have been stopped within Germany itself.  This from a 2009 article by John Hawkins on Hitler from the Town Hall web site.

There are other reasons why Hitler was able to come to power, other than the ten given.  One I can think of immediately, is an economic system which emphasized power from the top down.  There are also deeper psychological reasons.   Some of these are explained in an article I link to in "Best of" here.

Reading this article, I see a clear similarity to the U. S. now.  What a pity.  And yet, I believe we still have time to stop an autocratic demagogue, if we only will.  Let us be about the business of looking deep, and finding that will.

'Hamilton Plan' Gets a Hearing and a Convert

The plan of the self-named Hamilton Electors is getting a hearing in the larger press and public, including now The Washington Post.  The main tenet of Hamilton's that the electors should meet in toto, may or may not happen.  However, the idea that the Electors have the right to do so, or at least communicate with each other and develop a strategy already seems to be settled.

This only bodes well for the democracy.  The latest development is a Texas elector who says he will not vote for Trump.  Salon calls this gaining steam.  I call it at least gaining a little steam.  At least it is a step in the right direction and this is already a far cry from the days immediately after the election in which the ringing (and false) proclamation that Trump was the "President-elect" was off-set by courageous and patriotic young people who had another view and were willing to take to the streets.

Now with Trump spitting out new proposals in haphazard fashion, unnerving friends and foe alike -- both domestic and foreign -- business leaders have begun to voice concern about what they regard as inappropriate meddling in their affairs.  Whether or not this is true, Trump seems to be "transitioning" on the fly.  There is little rhyme or reason to his "madness."

Is this already prelude to a fall?

Representatives Urge Investigation of CrossCheck Program

Avid readers here are aware of Greg Palast and his investigation of the infamous Crosscheck program.  This program claims to identify individuals who have voted in two different states.

Rep. Alcee Hastins says, however, that standards are too loose resulting in disenfranchisement.

Several U. S. Representatives have written to Attorney General Loretta Lynch asking for an investigation of this program which appears to break federal law.

We must demand this matter be investigated and exposed forthwith.

Hamilton Electors to the Rescue!

Alexander Hamilton, U.S. Founding Father

UP-DATED WITH COMMENT AND LINKED ARTICLE

HOORAY FOR THE U.S.A.!

After more than three weeks of demonstrations, hoo-ha, and angst, finally comes a movement that can do real good -- the Hamilton Electors.

While it would have been far better for the Republican vote-suppression effort to be exposed -- and indeed it is still not too late for that -- this effort on the part of electors of conscience to save America from a demagogue is most admirable indeed.

I must leave this issue for the moment in order to beat a dead-line.  But I trust the following link will be of value to you.

Latest from Greg Palast on Vote Recounts

At this link --  Greg Palast on Vote Recounts -- Greg Palast clears the air regarding the up-coming vote recounts in the mid-west.

Palast puts it bluntly:  the recounts are not about Russian hacking.  The main issue are so-called spoiled ballots, or "spoilage."  This occurs when computerized scanning devices mis-read ballots.  This happens all the time, according to the experts.

We all need to keep close eyes on this process.  I realize how tempting it is to get caught up in the Trump "transition" -- cabinet choices, policy announcements and all the other accouterments of an in-coming President.  Yet there is only one problem.  No one has been elected yet.  Merely a technicality, you say?  The forth-coming recounts may show why this matter is no mere technicality.

Trump Has No Legitimacy, No Office, and No Mandate

Donald Trump, a man unfit to be president, is not yet the president-elect. He is a president-in-waiting until the 538 members of the Electoral College cast ballots Dec. 19.

This is the article I have been waiting for from Huffington Post.  Finally, someone else has said it:  Donald Trump is not the President-Elect -- yet.  If ever.

No Democracy, No Loyalty

Esteemed investigative reporter Greg Palast has done yeoman's work in helping to make clear the election of 2016 was vastly dishonest.  Earlier posts here have delved into this subject.  What we are faced with is a clear-cut attack on democracy.  The attack has a face:  D. Trump.

But Trump has backers.  Other sources have detailed some of these backers, though I personally have yet to see a detailed report on this subject.

It is clear that the Trump campaign and now erstwhile and supposed Presidency was planned.  Such things don't simply happen in politics.  What were the quid pro quos  involved in this crime?  And who is to be held accountable?

In coming days I plan to place here resources which you may consult to understand better how we got to where we are now.  For now, rest assured that as the Good Book says,  "Beware.  Your sins shall find you out."  This is true of each one of us.  Let's hope the pearly gates have a very wide berth for miscreants such as we.

Fact-Checking the Discussion on Green Party-sponsored Recount(s)

From 'Resistance' to 'Contested'

(Almost)

A phrase from the Civil Rights movement of many years comes to mind:  "Keep the faith, baby!"

Frantically looking for MSNBC's AM Joy embed so I can post it here.  For now, check here:

4:45 p.m. --

In this panel of my blog I will begin fact-checking the rather astonishing news that the Clinton campaign is joining the re-count in Wisconsin.

First, media persons are talking about whether the intention is to "overturn" the election results.  Of course it is not, nor can it be an attempt to "overturn" anything.  The purpose is to establish whether there has been a fair and verifiable vote.  As readers here know, it has been my contention for weeks that Donald Trump has yet to be elected to anything.  It is not just a matter of allegations of election stealing.  For the fact of the matter is Hillary Clinton incontestably won the popular vote.  And the Electoral College has not yet met.  If you have been following this blog you already know that there has thus been no vote for Trump.  What I have said so far is simple truth.

It is long past time for the experts to enter the field.

Coming soon -- video on this subject.

What a Difference One Weekend Can Make

From 'Resistance' to 'Contested'

(Almost)

While all Americans were enjoying various activities surrounding turkey and football;  and some were celebrating an election "victory" and others were mourning a "loss"  -- who knew clever Dr. Jill Stein was planning what ends up being an assault on the bogus Trump take-over of the Executive branch of the United States government?

Further, while media was sparkling over the expected Trump ascendancy (such as the "Entertainment Tonight" palavering);  and others were filled with indescribable dread over that same ascendancy -- an effort to simply count the vote (much as in 2000) was being put together by the Green candidate for President.  With the Clinton campaign now officially supporting the effort, suddenly a Trump presidency no longer seems like quite such a sure thing.

If Mrs. Clinton and her campaign can learn from the mistakes of 2000, such as not focusing only on computer anomalies and instead looking at the whole range of voter suppression efforts, we may see an uncovering of the stealth election of 2016 at a minimum, and a different President at the most.

As in 2000, we again go into uncertain territory.  The difference this time is we have now been down this road twice in one lifetime.  Let's hope the outcome is more honest this time, no matter what one may think of either candidate personally.

Trump Election Still Not a "Done Deal"

For nearly two weeks this web log has carried a banner claiming Trump has not been elected to anything.  This is true.  Even more astutely we can say Trump has not been elected to anything by anyone.

Now comes a new effort to deny Trump the majority in the Electoral College throwing the election into the House of Representatives.  The article below helps explain why this would not be the worst thing.  Democratic electors are working to elect a compromise candidate -- someone other than Hillary Clinton.

Normally, of course, we would avoid sending the election to the House.  But the idea now is to cause a re-assessment of the Electoral College as an institution.

I still support the Electoral College.  The best solution is to do all we can to establish a fair and just economy, not one ruled by oligarchs who can dictate elections, no matter the method of voting.

One thing we definitely do not want to do is mandate electors to vote for the "popular vote winner."  Such a requirement raises the question of who would certify that the vote was fair, untainted, and legitimate.  Such a certification this year is clearly impossible.

But under these emergency circumstances any responsible suggestion for upsetting the illegitimate Trump parade is welcome now.

Romney for President -- 2016?

UP-DATED WITH COMMENT

Via Princeton Election Consortium --

Tom_b

Not likely to happen, but if just 36 GOP electors flipped to, say, Romney, it would go to the House. The “faithless electors” would, at most, face a fine. They have basically nothing to lose. Romney would easily win in the House; he’d get all the Democrats and all but the most insane Republicans. American democracy would be rescued from the scrap heap of history....
Just putting it out there.

The Enemy Now is the Profit System In All But Name

Almost two weeks after the sham election of 2016, the anti-Trump movement is clarifying its mission and honing its weapons of resistance.  In what is really an amazingly short period of time organizers have correctly identified the lost central issue of this election year:  the economy.

While the Democratic Party built an electoral strategy around pursuing marginalized groups -- and to that extent had the right idea -- the new movement seeks to make the economy the central issue, no matter what one's background.  The article here puts this into clear language, a very helpful thing.

From this point on, it is hard to see the corporatized version of the Democratic Party leading the way.  It must now be new leaders.  I am ever so glad to see these leaders begin to emerge.  It is going to be most interesting to get to know them and hear what they have to say.

Strategy for Permanent Anti-Trump Movement Emerges

N.B.  As with almost all articles appearing now, it is taken for granted that Trump "won" and Clinton "lost."  Readers here know this is not the case.  But let us not miss the import of the anti-Trump movement, one which is getting it right on the matter of the economy.  This in and of itself is a major step forward.

The Musical Patriot in Transition

This blog shall be in transition over the next several days.  With the second "defeat" of a Democratic candidate for President who yet had won the popular vote -- all in only sixteen years -- it is time to see what is best for this blog in terms of format and content.

For now America enters into a serious time.  There are new dangers and new challenges.

And yet, for all this, Americans are still essentially a good-spirited people.

The main problem is the lack of information.  This is the fault of a profit-oriented media, set up more along the lines of entertainment now, than education and honest news-reporting (with a few exceptions, of course).

This blog was not in existence in 2000, the last time there were major allegations of election-tampering.  And make no mistake there was election tampering then and now, as well as in 2004 and beyond.

For those who come here regularly, you shouldn't fear.  I will be around.  There is a week-end coming which will allow some time for reflection.

In the meantime, The Musical Patriot  will remain up.  And I expect I will be posting again next week as pertinent information arrives at my desk.

Thanks for your interest in The Musical Patriot.

The Word Is Out: The Election WAS Stolen -- for Trump

Throughout the US election campaign one of The Donald’s main refrains was   “this election is rigged.”Turns out this particular Trump election rallying cry wasn’t a lie… Well, not entirely.

                                                                                                      -- The Economist

Here is another telling of the story of the stolen election of 2016.  Before the trail runs cold we must find out just who was behind this hideous distortion of the right to vote.

I have written of Greg Palast's work before.  He is a diligent watchdog of a reporter.  And it is clear, that as in 2000, what we had last week was a stolen election.  Yet, the people knew who the stronger candidate was and voted for her, even though she was deemed not personally popular.  (Was this an election for high school homecoming queen?)

As the Trump transition sadly collapses, Americans and the world deserve the facts as reported here:

Anti-Trump Protests Roll On With No End In Sight

Marchers protest Donald Trump in Washington, D. C. recently
Protests over the declaration that Donald Trump has been "elected"* continued for a seventh straight day on Tuesday in locations across America.  CBSN has more below.

Protestors of the peaceful kind are to be congratulated and thanked most heartily for their brave and timely demonstrations against the vitriol spewed by D. Trump in the recent campaign over the last year and a half. (year and a half!)

It seems that whoever thought of the possibility of protests after last week's sham election did not anticipate them being led by high school students.  I have been fairly amazed at the clarity of statements coming from student leaders in places like Washington, D.C.

And yet this should not be surprising, for students in that area would be most profoundly affected.

There is still time to stop Trump.  Only a citizenry mesmerized by the media would think otherwise.  Such thinking is myopic and stiffened into calcification by disinformation, including, perhaps, from Russian sources.

Protests Entered Seventh Day Yesterday

*Donald J. Trump has been elected by no one to anything.  In its simplicity, this statement is true.  the people elected Hillary Clinton as the best of the two leading candidates.  And the Electoral College has not even yet met.  With new turmoil in the Trump transition, there is no iron-clad guarantee they will end up voting for him in the end.  These are strange times, and strange times father strange events.  We shall wait and see.

Greg Palast Has More Information on the Stolen Election of 2016

Critical Information on Republican/Trump Dirty Tricks

[Be sure to scroll down for special video.]

Sometimes it is difficult to understand how there can be evil in the world.  In fact, certain philosophies and religions have denied even the concept of evil.

I, however, make no such denial.  Evil is real, all right.  And we must know it in order to confront it. Our very lives depend on this.

The link below provides absolutely crucial information about the Selection of 2016.  Greg Palast says there is more work to be done but it is already clear to him that Hillary Clinton did indeed win the election.  We must decide who is right:  Greg Palast or the dissemblers in the media who are so busy "explaining" how even the exit polls could "be so wrong."

Election Fall-out

Brief Status Up-date

I am sorry I was not able to be on line yesterday.  However, today I will be trying to catch up on the fall-out from the election.

The biggest news are the demonstrations now occurring from coast to coast protesting the alleged Trump win.  I use the word "alleged" for this reason:   Technically and in point of fact Trump has not yet been elected to anything.  As I wrote a couple of days ago some may call this a technicality.  However, in the case before us now, the person who won the popular vote is being denied the office.   The merits of the Electoral College can be debated;  I have been a supporter of retaining the Electoral College.

At any rate, Hillary Clinton won the popular vote and the Electoral College has not yet "met."  Therefore, if anyone can be said to have won the vote it would be Hillary Clinton.  There are many facets to this including all kinds of issues such as "unfaithful electors," and vote certification (which has not universally happened).  It seems that  the votes in California have not even been completely tallied and will not be until December!

Thus the protests against Trump are not only right, they are timely.  The New York Post even wrote about the possibility of electors voting for someone other than the popular vote winner in their state, something which apparently is legal in enough states to make Hillary Clinton President -- the Hillary who won not only the popular vote but a sizable number of Electoral College votes.

The most important consideration is the allegation made by the highly esteemed reporter, Greg Palast, that this was in fact a "Jim Crow" election.  I'll have more on this in the future.  For now you may visit his web site at < www.gregpalast.com  >.

The matter of the protests is likewise something I will be reporting more on.  I am very, very grateful to those persons who have peacefully protested this travesty of an election -- an election which resulted in a truly unbelievable result.

2000 REDUX: POPULAR VOTE LOSER DECLARED WINNER BY MEDIA

Source:  New York Times

Blogging the Election

Up-date:  Clinton Lead in Popular Vote Remains at 1.2% ("New York Times")

From Wednesday morning --

Rush Post

An election system designed over 200 years ago, aided and abetted by the media and other factors has once again declared the loser of the popular vote to be the President-elect.  The New York Times is reporting that Hillary Clinton leads the popular vote by 0.6%.

It is extremely unfortunate that a Democratic candidate who wins the popular vote is forced to concede before all the facts are known.

Just what do I mean by "all the facts?"  First notice that I am saying all the facts are not known at this time.  What we do know is that respected reporter, Greg Palast, an American investigative specialist and writer for the Guardian has reported that he has in his possession a list of 100,000 names drawn up by the Republican Secretary of State of a major battleground state -- names of people who have been targeted for elimination from the voting rolls.  Let that sink in for a moment -- 100,000 persons who otherwise would have been able to vote.

This issue of voter suppression will be a matter I will be looking into today and beyond.

Until the picture is clearer, it is far from certain that Trump is entitled to an Electoral College victory. But certainly he has not yet gained a popular vote victory, to say the least.

She further says the Democrats didn't "message" their positions properly.

Blogging Election Night Coverage 2016

First, I am very happy to say I am grateful for the live streaming of PBS Newshour coverage of the election results tonight.

Having said that, it is my duty to offer critique.  So, some calls have already been made.  I must report there are no results, no candidate photos for anyone else but Clinton and Trump.  Just saying (as they say!).

"Nation" Magazine Editor Says Media System Broken

Katrina vanden Heuvel
Along with the famous Andrew Sullivan article in Atlantic earlier in the year, this article by Katrina vanden Heuvel is among the best of the 2016 election season.  I do not wish to duplicate all her main points here because she has stated them so very powerfully.

She says essentially what I have been saying: the media malpractice of 2016 has in itself become a campaign issue.  And she further says what few dare say:  the reason for the malpractice is the wrong motivation of the media.  That is, if it doesn't improve ratings -- read, climate change, health care costs, education concerns -- it doesn't merit coverage.

On the other hand, if it involves vitriolic accusations (the e-mail non-issue), bedroom activities (Trumpian behavior), or violence (Trump rallies), the media is "there" in a flash.

As vanden Heuvel says, serious examination of the media must begin tomorrow.  Or in my case, today.

Clinton To Be Named Queen?

Fantasy Satire

May 17, 2017

The National Monarchist League yesterday released a poll showing a bare majority of Americans -- 50.999% -- favor naming Hillary Clinton Queen of the United States after months of partisan bickering in Congress.

Republicans, who have long pilloried Pres. Clinton, have taken obstructionism to new levels by drawing numerous lines in the sand over the budget, Supreme Court and other court nominations, as well as pet policy in the White House.  A hellacious row ensued, after the Presidential dog ruined a set of 1809 drapes hanging in the Red Room.   Congressmen from "red" states were particularly outraged over the executive canine's misbehavior.

The Monarchist League, which promotes royalty as "a salve" for emotionally wounded Americans, reported huge growth by its various formerly unknown chapters in 48 of the 50 states.  Washington, D. C. has no monarchist chapter and is the only place in America with an operating democratic (small "d") chapter.  Some monarchist chapters have grown from only two or three members to twelve to thirteen, a ten-fold increase.

Manufacturers of tiaras and purple robes are said to be delirious over the polling results, as they have seen their business suffer ever since the Founding Fathers signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776, sealing the fate of King George and every other English king and queen to follow.

Mrs. Clinton, whose husband is a descendant of royalty, said at a White House dinner this week that this is only a normal division within a marriage.  However, observers note that she never specifically disavowed royalty in her 2016 campaign.

For his part, Dan Rather went on Twitter to write this about the proposal to crown Hillary Clinton Queen.  "Just tell me where to line up and bow down."

Republicans are astonished that their intransigence has had the opposite effect of limiting Clinton's power.  In fact, it appears more likely than ever that her power will be greatly enhanced when she can follow Queen Latifah to the throne of glory.

The Voter's Diary

Just back from voting

I have just finished my public duty of voting in the federal election of 2016.  The process was quick, a little intimidating, but mostly pain-free.  The voter identifying process was a bit painful as this was never required in years past.  Also, having to show my I.D. twice instead of once seemed unnecessary.  The purpose seemed to be to keep anyone without an I.D. from even entering the polling place.

Otherwise, the ballot itself was simple, of the optical scan variety.  I was able to vote a straight party ballot (though not because the ballot was set up this way).  I also made my choice on two proposed state Constitutional amendments.

Now that the voting part is over I am looking forward to a nice holiday season.  I am also hoping certain politicians can remember what is truly important in this life and what is of secondary importance.  Our country is important, but of more importance is our way of life, our values.  To the end that voting reinforces our values, may today be a day of purpose and -- to the extent possible -- pleasure.

Hillary Clinton Campaign's Final Days: A Video Photomontage

Hillary Clinton, Arts Advocate

Essentially totally lost amid the hub-bub and fear of this unprecedented American Presidential campaign are the candidates' positions on the arts.  I have no idea what Donald Trump's position is on the arts, but a bit of research reveals Secretary Clinton to be a strong supporter.  In fact, I am astonished at the breadth of her support over the years.

In fact she has been awarded a prize for her support of the arts.  You can read more at the fine notice here:

Comey "Clears" Clinton -- Again

FBI chief Comey, who rocked the political world last week with a letter to Congress about supposed new Clinton e-mails, today announced those e-mails were inconsequential as far as any crimes were concerned.  This was no surprise to those who may have closely read the coverage in The Washington Post.

Yet damage was done to Mrs. Clinton.  Not only did it do damage to her campaign, but it added to the hyperbolic maelstrom of malcontent from the Republican camp.  Already there is scurrilous and wild talk of impeaching a new President Hillary Clinton, despite a total lack of any high crimes or misdemeanors.

It looks like this is the kind of scathing take-no-prisoners approach to politics from Republicans which we may have to endure after the election.  Yet, it is completely unnecessary.

American Democracy At Risk

Washington Post reports on Russian involvement in U.S. election

Today's Washington Post  reports on the American media's witting or unwitting participation in Russian attempts to influence the U.S. election.

Eric Chenoweth of the Institute for Democracy in Eastern Europe writes about the WikiLeaks release of "information" from the private e-mail accounts of persons associated with Hillary Clinton.  The first alarming thing is the statement that WikiLeaks has acknowledged trying to defeat Hillary Clinton.  The second item of major concern is the evidence that Russian actors have been behind the hacking of the e-mail accounts.

This whole issue is deserving of much, much more attention than it has so far received.  The matter is profoundly urgent.

Comey Must Go

In a democracy, everyone is entitled to his opinion as they say.  And my view is that James Comey must resign as head of the F.B.I.  While information about the latest fiasco over the seemingly interminable e-mail issue continues to leak out, it is clear Comey behaved irresponsibly and has grievously harmed the reputation of both the F.B.I. and the Justice Department.

Coming as it has so close to the election there is no remedy but for Comey to leave.  The Boston Globe and others now agree.

We can thank Mr. Comey for his service and admit that Republican politics have affected him adversely.  But his latest non-disclosure coming so close after his summer press conference on the same issue means the nation must have a new start at the F.B.I.   What we need now is an individual who values the country's needs above his own personal needs.

Hillary Clinton Leading in More Than Polls

In a sign of the strength of the Clinton campaign USA Today reports Ms. Clinton has a huge lead in total number of positive ads which have aired compared with D. Trump.

This is also evidence that the Clinton campaign remains strong -- in ad dollars, get-out-the vote efforts, as well as polling numbers.  The biggest enemy is likely not Trump, but complacency, with ill will on the part of the media a strong second.

If Hillary Clinton Drops in the Polls

in any major way it won't be because of "Comeygate."

Below is an excerpt from Dr. Sam Wang on the Princeton Election Consortium web site.

Due to political polarization it cannot be expected that the muddled news story about FBI Director Comey's supposed discovery of new questionable Clinton State Department e-mails will affect the Presidential race to any great degree.

Further, there will likely be new derogatory news stories about Trump.  In fact, The Washington Post already has one on page 1 today.

There is no need to panic about the Presidential race.  However, it is a good time to renew questioning of the media's methods.

***********

Dr. Sam Wang on "Comeygate:"

  1. The national race will not change meaningfully. This is not a story that changes anyone’s mind. Maybe the margin (national or Meta) between the two candidates will move by 1 percentage point when aggregated…2 points max. It doesn’t change the high likelihood of a Clinton win.
  2. Journalists and pundits will continue to feed hysterics by fussing over the Comey story. They may even attempt to use polling evidence to justify their coverage. However, note that national polls had already tightened by 1-2 percentage points, even before Comeygate.

The Decline of the Republican Party Should Not Signal the Decline of America

In the Washington Post article linked to below, the writer tell it as it is.  Trump should never have been nominated in the first place.

The unseemly trinity of Trump, Republican Party, and the media are responsible for this colossal mess.  Those who made the mess should be expected to clean it up.  Sadly, that appears quite unlikely.

News Notice

Colin Powell says he will support Hillary Clinton

Source -- Huffington Post:

Presidential Campaign Grinds On; Clinton Fights Complacency

The Presidential campaign grinds on with a dangerously unqualified Republican and a smart, robust Democratic candidate whose credentials are so far superior as to be in another league entirely.

Yet, experience shows that being consistently in the lead as Hillary Clinton has been essentially continuously for many months, also has its dangers.  Some of these are described in my sister blog, Democratic Campaign Watch.

The Clinton campaign claims that Donald Trump is now spending money he has been hoarding for weeks.  I have not had a chance to review the figures yet.  However, I do know that no matter how deeply unpopular Trump is, his core supporters are aggrieved and motivated.  These supporters coupled with millions of dollars raises important concerns in my mind.  Some of these concerns having to do with Trump's fascist tendencies have been explored here previously.

The big danger now is complacency on the part of Clinton's supporters.  Ms. Clinton will continue to need money for organizing and media.   The history of this campaign shows that Clinton does best when directly contrasted with Trump as during last summer's conventions and the debates.  Absent this kind of contrast and exposure, Clinton has done somewhat less well.  Thus any complacency could -- at its worst -- represent disaster.

Evan McMullin Now Leading in Utah for First Time According to Poll

Evan McMullin, independent candidate for President

One poll does not an election make; but this is quite major, although not totally surprising.

Not Too Late to Abandon Trump

While certain writers on line currently say it is too late for the Republican Party to dump Trump (and absent a withdrawal by Herr Trump this would indeed be difficult), it is not to late for Republicans to disown him.  Of course, they may no longer be able to call themselves Republicans.  Why not work now to establish a new party?  It could be called many things, the New Conservative Party, for instance.  Or if they wanted to re-establish the broad-based Republican Party of Nixon, Goldwater, and Rockefeller, they could call it -- I don't know -- the Pachyderm Party.

This option is the only one which makes sense, other than supporting Evan McMullin, who at least may have a chance to win in Utah.  But having allowed self-interested movements such as the tea party a strong foothold, it is going to be extremely difficult to work within the old Republican Party.

Not to Late to Abandon Trump

Trump Threats Over Election Fraud Mostly Hollow

According to an online legal web site, Trump's options, should he claim election fraud, are limited.  The article at the link below explains that fairly narrow range of options.  He can file lawsuits, he can send protestors into the streets, and he can attempt to utilize a compliant media megaphone.

The concern is he could
try to arouse millions of his voters into some kind of civil disobedience or worse.  My concern is over the months to come whether Trump could cause trouble worse than the Tea Party movement of early 2009.

What would stop him from initiating something like this?  He can certainly try either through his own cable channel (which he has said is not going to be created) or through some other kind of organization.  His ability to do that would depend on just how aggrieved persons might be and how strong Clinton's hand is after the election.

A landslide for Clinton would certainly help.  A watchful eye from Pres. Obama would be essential.  And a vigilant public alerted to possible trouble from Trump would be critical.

Humanitarian Crisis Looms in Aleppo

As the U. S. prepares to elect a new President it is an optimum time to re-visit the Syrian situation.  While I do not believe there is a white knight among any of the "actors" in the Syrian conflict, perhaps the U.S. position has merit after all.  With a Hillary Clinton win growing more certain it is helpful to review the facts of the Syrian situation since a new Clinton administration's policy would be an important force in the entire mid-East area, including in Syria.

Ms. Clinton has largely supported the Obama administration policy.  While I have been critical of the earlier lack of success on the part of the Obama administration in Syria, it is good to hear all viewpoints.

The article below is very useful in pointing out the impending vast humanitarian crisis in Aleppo.  Let us hope and pray that somehow tragedy there may be kept to an absolute minimum if not eliminated altogether.

The Republican Party Is No Longer a Major Party: Beginning Evidence

A sub-theme of The Musical Patriot has been and will continue to be that the Republican Party is no longer a major party, certainly not a responsible political party.  Articles in the press and media along these lines are beginning to pile up.  There are one or two in today's Washington Post.

There has been an imperious announcement from Sen. John McCain that contrary to long-standing custom the Republicans will supposedly not even consider any Supreme Court nominee put forward by a President Clinton.  This outrageous assertion can mean only one thing:  Republicans are no longer seriously interested in participating in the leadership of the country unless one of their own is an occupant of the White House, even if that person were to be someone McCain himself has disavowed.  Or perhaps McCain has not thought of it this way.

And this is the scary thing.  Republicans have trouble thinking of what is best for the country.  There are exceptions to this, of course.  But all too often Republicans seem only to want power for the sake of power.  There is a disdainful and even noxious attitude toward what it takes to participate in democratic government.  It is this attitude which raise red flags for me and others.

McCain, a Senator who took months to reject Trump, deigns to try to dictate to the entire Senate which White House occupants get to have their nominees considered.  This clear departure from long, long tradition -- a tradition flowing from the Constitution itself -- is shockingly dangerous and not to be condoned in any fashion.

President Obama Advises Trump on How to Be a Man

President Obama has advice for Donald Trump:  stop whining about a rigged election.
Trump's diatribes about a rigged election are not only tiresome at this point, but are having an undermining effect on the democracy.

Apparently, if large numbers of people see Trump as unqualified, often incoherent, morally challenged, inept, and demeaning of others -- this makes them conspirators.

The Republican Party After Trump

This, of course, is a huge subject.  There are those who wonder whether the Republican Party can even survive Trump.  And it may not.

What is most important is that the Republic survive.  And it seems that it will -- if only barely.
Our task now is to reinforce the democracy, to make correctives so Trumpism as a proto-fascist movement never emerges again.

To do this, we must provide for the needs of our citizens in a way the profit system never can.  We must ensure work which provides a living wage for families.  We must provide health care for all.  We must make provision for a healthy and secure retirement.  Our young people must receive an equal, practical, and effective education.  The environment deserves protection.  And all this must be accomplished without ushering in an authoritarian government.  An ambitious agenda?  To be sure.  But we must continue to strive for decency and respect for all.  Our children depend on us now.

Republican Control of Congress Increasingly Imperiled

Republicans are increasingly worried about losing control of Congress in the wake of numerous recent D. Trump controversies.  The New York Times reports today the searing division now playing out within Republican ranks is leading Democrats to believe they can and should commit new resources in targeted Senate and House races.

Republican fears in this regard and Democratic hopes are justified.

Trump Performance Called Disastrous

I must be honest:  Your Musical Patriot decided other activities would be better for his mind and soul rather than watching a debate involving the highly unqualified, impertinent, rude, and salacious Donald Trump.  So I read a book by an African-American doctor and listened to organ music instead. I was happy as a clam.

Fortunately, the Internet allows me to see just what I need to see to make up my mind about what happened.  Following the link below will begin to give you some idea of the tenor and content of the event.  (Whatever her relatively minor faults might be, I feel sorry for a former First Lady and Secretary of State having to participate in something like this.)

Yet hope remains.

Is this not, after all, much like a reality TV show, a genre of which Donald Trump was once a part?  The most humane view of this crisis shows Trump to be just a normal person.  "I did something bad and now I have apologized just like my advisers told me to."  It is something like the rowdy bad-boy being sat down by his concerned roommates on reality TV and being given a good going-over.

But this is not just an ordinary person.  This is a candidate for President of the most powerful nation on earth.  We can and must do better.  Evidently, on Saturday members of the Congressional leadership still thought otherwise.

Republican Opposition to Trump Grows

Americans should listen to the former Congressmen who write in a new letter that Trump is manifestly unqualified to be President.

This is what the pundits and media should have been saying unanimously from the very beginning.

Trump Represents Clear and Present Danger to Freedom of the Press: New York Times Journalist

And this goes directly, by the way, to why Donald Trump isn't getting the critical coverage he should be getting. He called me at home on April 27th to threaten to sue me. Some of the freelance articles that I have written were lawyered way beyond all reason, out of fear. And I've had two news organizations say, "We can't report that, because we're afraid that Donald Trump will sue us." This is an extraordinary thing for a politician to do. And the Supreme Court in this country has been very clear back to the 19th century that the highest and most protected form of speech is political speech. And this is all about -- falls under the rubric of political speech.

The Character of Hillary Clinton

This wonderful video needs little additional comment.

First, as far as character is a component of the judgment process of any serious voter, this video tells much.  First is Hillary Clinton's seriousness about life, the political process, and the Presidency. Second, can anyone imagine Donald Trump speaking this way?  That is, can anyone imagine Donald Trump answering this question with this kind of clarity, depth, relevance, and sincerity?

It is time to be honest, America.

Thank You, E. J. Dionne

That a political party, a political system and a media blessed with broad constitutional freedoms have allowed a man like this to get so close to the presidency should be a matter for serious introspection.  And that introspection should start now.
                                                                                                    -- E. J. Dionne

The recent article by E. J. Dionne from which the quote above is taken is the media at its best. Mr. Dionne and a few others, mostly from The Washington Post and The New York Times, have led the way in calling out the media for their normalization of a man patently unsuited to the Presidency of the United States.  The media have not been the only ones playing this game.  Prominent Republican candidates have been playing the game, too, notably Christie, McConnell, Ryan, and Giuliani.

The Post's editorial yesterday addressed to any remaining undecided voters was an excellent advice book for unaware citizens who might yet be tempted by the Trump show.  The article linked to below is a good prelude to that editorial.

Voters in Ohio Offended By Allegations of Trump's Tax Evasions, Legal Or Not

Trump Support Beginning to Collapse?

Hillary Clinton Is Likable After All?

Close readers of this blog know by now that pundit comments on the Presidential race must be closely scrutinized.  Specifically, all claims regarding polls and polling must be looked at critically, for very few (if any?) reporters are schooled in polling and how to read poll results.

I make no claims at being an expert, myself, so I often refer readers to the Princeton Election Consortium.   The consortium, likewise, must be examined.  However, the work the Princeton group does under the leadership of Dr. Sam Wang is some of the best available today.

For my purposes today, I am interested in relating how poorly the press and media did in August and September, beginning with an extremely poorly-sourced Associated Press story which had no facts to back up its assertion that the activities of the Clinton Foundation "raised questions."  Others, including Krugman have written about this Associated Press fiasco, so I do not need to duplicate their work.

But apparently many people were somewhat stunned to see how likable Ms. Clinton appeared in last Monday night's debate after months and years of Republican rightists claiming she is ________, or ___________, or _______ -- you fill in the blank.   Or let Paul Krugman do it for you:

As I work through the various articles about the so-called debate being released today, I am comfortable referring readers to a previous post here about the Princeton Election Consortium's view on pundit reactions.  I do recognize that some pundits have very useful and even pungent things to say today and I value their words.

As for the effect on the race, I believe Dr. Wang's words ring true today.  (See previous post below.)
