I am currently watching the film The Corporation, a film the Seattle Times called "one of the must-see documentaries of the new century." I will have more to say after seeing the entire film, but I have already garnered new information about the reach of corporate power. Perhaps the most stunning piece of information -- something I knew but had forgotten -- is that the Supreme Court has ruled that corporations may patent living organisms. The government has further ruled that corporations may patent or license genes. Thus, any living thing except a birthed human being, but including the genes of a human being, may be privately owned! This is sick and outrageous! It violates all ethical, moral, and religious standards regarding the sanctity of life. Where is the vaunted Roman Catholic Church on this issue? Where is the National Council of Churches? Where is the Board of Church and Society of the United Methodist Church?
At least we have certain organizations and persons who do care about this issue. As for the religious institutions I mention above, I await further information and will be glad to publish anything I find.
In the meantime, if you have not already seen it, find The Corporation right away. You will be glad you did.
IN EXIGENCY. Welcome to THE MUSICAL PATRIOT (In Exigency), a web log of information and inspiration. Also included are events of interest in my own life. Now in its nineteenth year.
