I am an originalist — not the kind who is a self-proclaimed savant claiming to be able to divine the mind of people centuries ago. Instead, I am an originalist interested in perpetuating the message of that great document, the Declaration of Independence, soon to be celebrating it’s 250th anniversary, as well as that of the constitution.
Of course, no document can be perfect. In the case of the constitution, the founders realized this and wisely allowed for amendments. Surely amendments could be useful now.
In any event, most definitely we do not need the resurrection of a protective, isolationist stance which threatens to transmogrify the country from a democracy into a banana republic. As Martin Luther King Junior, said, “Let freedom ring! Let freedom ring!”
