In a speech this past week-end, Noam Chomsky has echoed something I have been hinting at here for weeks if not months: the Republicans of today do not so much represent a political party as an insurgency. Or maybe he and I have had the same thoughts and he has articulated the idea better.

From the Salon article: "You can tell that even by the votes. I mean, any issue of any complexity is going to have some diversity of opinion. But when you get a unanimous vote to kill the Iranian deal or the Affordable Care Act or whatever the next thing may be, you know you’re not dealing with a political party."
ReplyDeleteTMP comments: On the other hand, this could also be viewed as support for the views of those founding fathers who were suspicious of political parties in the first place. Parties, after all, can begin simply to look out for their own interests and those of their financial backers, not the American people.
